‘Where’s Daddy?’ explores Israel’s use of artificial intelligence in its current war in Gaza.
Israel’s military and tech sector have long used Palestine as a testing ground (and Palestinians as test subjects) for their technology before selling it to foreign governments. With the introduction of artificial intelligence and automation, the consequences for Palestinians have only become more dire. The recent exposé from Israel-based organizations ‘+972’ and ‘Local Call’ reveals an unprecedented use of artificial intelligence in IDF’s selection of targets in Gaza with little or no human oversight. Among IDF’s AI programs currently in use are ominously-named and highly efficient ‘The Gospel’, ‘Lavender’, ‘Wolf Pack’, and ‘Where’s Daddy?’, which tracks Hamas operatives in their homes when they’re with their families. The use of ‘The Gospel’ and ‘Where’s Daddy?’, coupled with IDF’s new rules of engagement has been the main reason for the devastating civilian death toll in Gaza. Previously, IDF’s principle of proportionality allowed for dozens of civilian deaths for a single military target. According to multiple Israeli sources, now that number is in the hundreds.
While the five tracks on the EP all share the same thematic focus, stylistically they are quite diverse. ‘Habsora’ is a syncopated techno cut with tactile synths and an aggressive dubstep bassline as efficient and precise as the AI model it’s named after. Next up is ‘Lavender’, a sparse but groovy gray area track that traces Israel’s deadly advanced technologies across the landscape of the occupied territories with Middle Eastern instrumentation, somber pads and Løt.te’s signature digital glitch. By contrast, ‘Drown in the Pool of Intelligence’ swaps the rhythmic drive of the previous two tracks with mangled high-definition sound design, drawing the listeners’ attention to the dichotomy between data and the flesh. The title track ‘Where’s Daddy?’ picks the speed back up with overwhelming syncopated beats and screaming synths. The final track ‘From Jenin to Rafah’ is a single field recording made in Istanbul, Turkey in 2021, that captures the pattering early morning rain, the overlapping calls to prayer from multiple nearby mosques bouncing off of the wet landscape, and a bird singing its heart out.
